Yesterday was exceptionally warm for early April here in the hills of western Massachusetts and the bloodroot plants were a complete surprise at 8:30 in the morning the white buds were standing erect, each wrapped in its single leaf.
Three hours later they had opened to present their cheery selves.
Il love their leaf - looks like batwings unfurling. And before flower opens, reminds me a candlesticks. Mine just popped up this morning.
I would add a photo of the first single bloodroot I saw in a yard yesterday but there doesn't seem to be an image sharing feature for the comments section. This flower is so special, and as Jeff says, the way the bud is protected by a single leaf is so distinctive - one of the first promises of spring.
